Abdulkhaliq Hussein, a prolific writer on liberal themes and a political analyst is well-known for his campaigning for democracy and modernity for the Middle-East. He lives in England.

Hussein is an Iraqi British citizen born in Fao, in the Basra province in Iraq. In 1968 Hussein graduated from Mussel University’s Medical College, Iraq and started working at Iraqi Teaching Hospitals in Basra and Baghdad. 

In 1977 he received his Diploma in Surgery from Baghdad University. Four years later, in 1981, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Scotland.

He left Iraq on January 5, 1979 to further his post-graduate education in the United Kingdom. He worked and trained in UK hospitals as a surgeon from 1979 - 1998. He was also involved in medical research work and published several papers in the British Medical Journal.

For a few years in the 1990s Hussein was Editor in Chief of the Arabic Newspaper “Al-Ghad Al-Democrati”, which means ‘Democratic Future’. This Iraqi newspaper, which was based in London, was established to serve as an opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime.   

In 1998 he took early retirement on medical ground and devoted his time for political and intellectual activities.

Abdulkhaliq Hussein’s areas of interest include philosophy, history and politics from an early age. Through publications, such as articles in renowned Arab newspapers, as well as the electronic Arab press, or essays he is promoting public awareness regarding Muslim fanatics and fundamentalists. He is advocating for a wide range of issues, for example for women’s rights, the Western style liberal democracy, civil society and secularism. In the last twenty years he has published more than 700 articles and essays.

Hussein is involved in Middle East politics, mainly in Iraqi issues. So far he has published one book with the title “The July 14th 1958 Revolution in Iraq” and has written two others, which have not been published yet. His first book which was released in 2003, was published in its second edition in 2007 and deals with the modern history of Iraq. His second book is called “Democracy, Secularism and Islamism” and his latest one has the title “Political Sectarianism and the Governing Problem in Iraq”.
